Kyabgon Trulshik Adeu Rinpoche also known as
Drupchok Rinpoche (1931-2007) was an important Drukpa Kagyu teacher
from Tsechu Monastery, Nangchen. Like the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche, he
was a disciple of 8th Drukpa Choegon Rinpoche and Samten Gyatso.
Both 8th Nangchen Adeu Rinpoche and 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche are the
two main lineage holders of Drukpa Kagyu Lineage from 8th Drukpa
Choegon Rinpoche. He is the main teacher of the current 9th Choegon
Rinpoche, 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche and many other great tulkus of
Drukpa Kagyu tradition.
The 8th Adeu Rinpoche was born on the 4th day
of the 12th Tibetan month in the Iron Horse year of the 15th
calendarical cycle, in the middle of a freezing winter. The 16th
Karmapa and the 8th Choegon Rinpoche recognized the child as the
authentic reincarnation of the 7th Adeu Rinpoche. He then was taken
to Tsechu Gompa (Nangchen Garh) for enthronement at the age of 7.
Immediately after this, he began his traditional education in
writing, calligraphy, poetry, astrology, mandala painting,
spiritual practice, text recitation and many related trainings. At
the same time, the young Adeu Rinpoche also received many teachings
and pith-instructions based on the old and new traditions, but
primarily on the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage from the 8th Choegon
Rinpoche, Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro and many other great
masters. After that, Rinpoche entered into a 7 years retreat,
during which he practised the sadhanas of different deities and
trained in Tsalung, following the Six Yogas of Naropa and the
liberating Mahamudra mind-training practices. Adeu Rinpoche later
wrote a precise commentary on the three sets of vows, the 'Root of
Heart-Essence of Nyingmapa Lineage', and on the various mandala
deities.
In 1958, all the sacred texts, statues and
precious holy objects were completely destroyed, and Rinpoche was
imprisoned for 15 years. Although Adeu Rinpoche suffered a great
deal, the period in prison gave him an opportunity to meet many
accomplished masters, who had also been imprisoned, especially
Khenpo Munsel from whom he received instructions on Dzogchen, and
under whose guidance, he practised the rare and precious teachings
of the Aural Lineage (Nyengyü) of the Nyingma school, and studied
the various Nyingmapa Terma teachings.
Adeu Rinpoche was an extremely important
master of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage, especially following the
Cultural Revolution, during which many great Drukpa Kagyu Lineage
masters passed away. When teachings of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage was
faced with extinction, Adeu Rinpoche was the only remaining lineage
holder of the Khampa tradition of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage.
In 1940's, 8th Drukpa Choegon Rinpoche had
already prophesized that the reason he choose to gave empowerment
in Nangchen Garh (Tsechu Monastery) rather than Khampagar was
because Adeu Rinpoche will in future be responsible for the
propagation and transmission of his lineage. At that time, 8th Adeu
Rinpoche was the head of Drukpa Kagyu Lineage in Nangchen.
Prophetically, at the end of 1980, Adeu
Rinpoche was invited to Tashi Jong in India to pass on the entire
lineage of the Khampa Drukpa Kagyu tradition to the present 9th
Khamtrul Rinpoche Shedrub Nyima, 9th Drukpa Choegon Rinpoche Chokyi
Wangchuk and many other tulkus of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage. Later
he was invited to other part of India and Nepal in early 1990s,
where he gave complete lineage transmissions to all the Drukpa
Kagyu rinpoches, khenpos and monks.
In later part of 1990's, Adeu Rinpoche gave
the complete empowerments of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage to the local
tulkus in Nangchen. About 51 tulkus and 1600 monks and nuns were
present to receive the empowerments and oral transmissions. In this
way, Adeu Rinpoche became the main lineage master of the Khampa
Drukpa Kagyu tradition for all the Drukpa Kagyu tulkus.
Thereafter, Adeu Rinpoche went to Bhutan and
exchanged initiations with Je Khenpo, Jigme Chodrak Rinpoche, Dilgo
Khyentse Rinpoche and many other enlightened masters, thus becoming
a representative of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage. Later, he visited
Bhutan and India once again and gave empowerment to every Drukpa
Kagyu Masters from the Je Khenpos of Bhutan to all Drukpa Kagyu
Rinpoches and Sanghas.
Adeu Rinpoche also took responsibility for
restoring Tsechu Gompa, and at the same time tirelessly collecting,
correcting and editing all the Drukpa Kagyu teachings, tantras and
practices.
In this way, Nangchen Adeu Rinpoche has
conferred the complete lineage transmission to all Drukpa Kagyu's
tulkus and monks, including the Six Yogas of Naropas in more than
60 monasteries, guided thousands of practitioners to practice
Mahamudra and Dzogchen, performed hundreds of Drubchens in
different monasteries, compiled more than 120 volumes of Drukpa
Kagyu texts and established numerous retreat centers.
After a brief period of illness he passed away
in Tibet in July 2007.
